As one of the most powerful women in the world, Queen Elizabeth II can, in theory, eat anything she wants. So her choice breakfast may reveal more about her character than it does her appetite.
Former royal chef Darren McGrady told MarieClaire.com that what Her Majesty eats for breakfast isn’t unlike what us common folk eat on a regular basis. “Breakfast was very simple for Her Majesty,” he said. “Some Kellogg’s cereal from a plastic container, which she’d serve herself. And some Darjeeling tea.”
So while the Queen will never eat these 9 common foods, she’d prefer cold cereal out of Tupperware—in a previous interview with The Telegraph, McGrady revealed that Special K is her usual choice—over a hot gourmet meal presented to her on a gold platter.
The humble meal is surprising for a royal, but perhaps not for The Queen herself. Her frugality has made headlines on multiple occasions. She only wears one nail polish—and it’s ridiculously cheap. She reportedly uses an electric space heater at Buckingham Palace and recycles her outfits, PEOPLE reports.
Of course, that doesn’t mean she’s against any sort of luxury. “The Queen loved scrambled eggs with smoked salmon and a grating of truffle,” McGrady told The Telegraph. “But she was too frugal to ever order fresh truffles and only really enjoyed them at Christmas when the truffles were sent as a gift.”
Next, find out more fascinating facts—and a few scandals!—about Queen Elizabeth.
