4 Reactions to Sex Ed Classes That Deserve a Collective Slow Clap

Fist pump-worthy responses to face palm-worthy "information" Chances are, your sex ed class definitely wasn't sexy. But for some unlucky students, it's not educational, either. Instead of instructing students on the ins and outs of safe and healthy intercourse, some teachers seem hell-bent on doling out outdated and just-plain-wrong advice. But students, parents, and concerned citizens alike refuse to accept failures in the system, like abstinence-only education. And some have responded in really amazing ways:AFTER HER TEACHER passed out an oversimplified quiz on how to respond to objections that a potential partner might make to using a condom, one 14-year-old girl wrote what is quite possibly the most empowering teen writing we've ever seen :RELATED: 10 Things We WISH We Learned in Sex EdWHEN MEDICAL HUMANITIES and bioethics professor Alice Dreger sat in on her freshman son's sex education class, she was shocked by all of the misinformation she heard. So she treated her Twitter followers to the horribly inaccurate proclamations made by her son's instructor, including the faulty notion that abstinence education reduces premarital sex . Here are some other highlights: I feel like raising my hand and saying "Can I tell my sexual history, which involves a lot of pleasure before and during marriage?"— Alice Dreger April 15, 2015  Now he's talking about getting a girl preg and them hiding it from their parents. Yup, that's what sexual shame does, dude!— Alice Dreger April 15, 2015  "We are going to roll this dice 8 times. Every time your number comes up, in pretend your condom failed and you get a paper baby." JESUS!!!— Alice Dreger April 15, 2015  Paper babies are being handed out to EVERYONE. They have ALL HAD CONDOM FAILURE AND THE WHOLE CLASS IS PREGNANT.— Alice Dreger April 15, 2015  "You have to have a baby!" There are apparently no scissors in the room for paper abortions.— Alice Dreger April 15, 2015  Teacher says to me "I agree that sex is good in a loving relationship." I said it can be plenty terrific without. He looked shocked. Shocked— Alice Dreger April 15, 2015 A SEX ED WORKSHOP in a Singapore high school took a gender stereotyping, victim-blaming approach: The highlights include teaching students that when a girl says one thing, she "really means" something else—and the warning that if a "scantily clad" girl walks by, a guy can't help but look because "no man with a pulse could have done otherwise." When 17-year-old Agatha Tan was subjected to the ridiculousness of this "educational" booklet and its coordinating "It's Uncomplicted" workshop, she penned a 2,000-word open letter to her principal about the school's alarmingly sexist sex ed instruction. Facebook was lucky enough to get the CC:  { var js, fjs = d.getElementsByTagName[0]; if ) return; js = d.createElement; js.id = id; js.src = "//connect.facebook.net/en_US/sdk.js#xfbml=1&version=v2.3"; fjs.parentNode.insertBefore;});So I wrote an open letter to my principal about last week's sex ed:Dear Dr. Hon,I am Agatha, a C1 student, and my...Posted by Agatha Tan on Monday, October 6, 2014RELATED: The Most Ridiculous Sex Ed Stories EVERA TOME BOLDLY TITLED Teen Sex by the Book is being used in some New South Wales, Australia, sex ed classes, and it's embarrassingly sexist. The book issues a "warning" to girls: "Recognise this visual quick-fire potential of your male friends. Be kind in how you choose to dress and behave…. Is it a godly thing to wear a short skirt and low-cut, tight top tempting your Christian brothers to lust?" One sex ed professional who's not okay with teaching this kind of nonsense is Deanne Carson, who's written a 21-page critical analysis of the book. In it, she picks apart the manual's promotion of purity culture and gender stereotyping, its way of scaring readers about the dangers of extramarital sex, and its anti-abortion stance: "It is discriminatory and contains content known to increase negative physical and mental health outcomes for some groups in our society," Deanne writes. You have to give her credit for maintaining such professionalism, especially when the book includes a note that guys can unknowingly "bond with porn stars" when they masturbate to their videos.
