New Study on Tipping Servers Determines That Women Are More Superficial Than Men

Go figure. In today's "WTF, really?" news, research suggests that women are more superficial than guys when tipping their servers. Womp womp.For the study, published in the journal Economic Psychology, researchers surveyed over 200 customers about their experiences at five different restaurants in Virginia. The customers were asked about how much they tipped their servers, how good the service was, and how attractive their servers were on a scale of one to five, one being "homely," two "below average," three "average," four" above average," and five "strikingly beautiful or handsome."RELATED: The Look That Men Find Most Attractive Bummer alert: It turns out, women were more likely to rank a female server as a one or two than guys. Women also tipped 84 cents more per dollar spent to female servers they rated as attractive than female servers they considered unattractive . On the other hand, there was no significant difference between how much guys tipped women or men based on their appearances and very little difference in how much women tipped male servers based on their appearances. Feeling icky yet?RELATED: The Sad Thing Men Do to Impress Attractive Women The researchers estimated that, on average, "attractive" female and male servers made about $1,261 more a year than "unattractive" servers, mostly due to the disparity in women's tips.The study authors wrote in their study that these results could mean that women appear to reward other women for looking good more than guys do—regardless of the level of service provided. RELATED: All the Things Women Mistakenly Think Men Find Sexy The study authors noted that more research needs to be done to confirm these findings with other jobs and in other regions of the country.
