These Are the Best (and Worst) Cities for Sleep

By now, it’s no secret that the average adult should get between seven to nine hours of sleep every night. And considering how important sleep is for your productivity, mood, and health, you’d think that most of us would take that advice to heart. But as it turns out, some of us are better at hitting the hay than others—and that difference might have something to do with where we live.

A recent survey from Amerisleep has revealed the major cities where residents are staying up too late and where they’re getting their recommended amount of slumber. Their researchers surveyed over 1,300 Americans about their sleeping habits and compiled the data into the comprehensive map above.

Here’s what they found: Residents of Fort Collins, Colorado, are the most likely to get seven to nine hours of sleep each night. In fact, just 25 percent of residents get less than seven hours of sleep, on average. People who live in Loveland and Boulder, Colorado, are also in luck; their hometowns are the second and third best cities for sleep in the country.

On the other hand, Gary, Indiana, was ranked the worst city for sleep, where 52 percent of residents are sleep-deprived. Half of the people living in Detroit, Michigan, and Camden, New Jersey, also regularly sleep for less than seven hours a night. (Find out which habits are ruining your sleep quality.)
