As Prince Harry and Meghan Markle prep for their wedding in May, we’re willing to bet that Meghan is dutifully brushing up on the etiquette rules the royal family must always follow. But, funny enough, she might have already broken one longstanding tradition.
Rumor has it that Meghan will be spending Christmas with Queen Elizabeth and the rest of the royal family—which is unusual for someone who has not married into the family yet. Kate Middleton, by contrast, spent Christmas with her own family the year she was engaged to Prince William. (By the way, Prince Harry might break this one royal rule at his wedding, too.)
A few unusual circumstances might call for an exception, however. Prince Harry asked his grandmother to allow Meghan to join them this year, because she will be far away from her own family this holiday season. Queen Elizabeth reportedly gave his request the thumbs up.
“Now that they are engaged it was unthinkable that they would be apart for Christmas,” a friend of Prince Harry’s told The Times. “The royal family have fully welcomed Meghan into the fold.”
If the rumor turns out to be true, Meghan will take part in some of the royal family’s most festive holiday traditions, including a black tie dinner and full English breakfast.
Something tells us the soon-to-be duchess won’t get dinged for this slight departure from tradition, though. Why, you ask? Here are 12 more times the royal family has broken their own protocol.
